Are you one of those who have been on a low carb diet and still not experiencing significant weight loss? Or you want to know some reasons why you are not losing weight as expected? Read through, to see what can slow down weight loss process or some reasons why you are not losing weight despite diet changes. Bear in mind that weight loss requires determination and patience.
Consuming More Calories than you Burn
A calorie is a unit of energy. As mentioned in one of my articles, a gram of carb contains 4 calories, a gram of protein contains 4 calories and a gram of fat contains 9 calories. Weight gain mostly occurs when calorie intake is higher than calories expended. So to lose weight, you have to eat moderately and engage in physical activities to burn excess calories. Although a low carb diet restricts the intake of starch or sugar which can cause weight gain, you also have to watch calories from other sources like protein and fat. Most low carb diets are high in protein and fats which contains equal or twice amount of calories. Try to eat your low carb meals in moderate quantity to be satisfied but do not starve yourself. You need energy for your day to day activities, exercises and normal functioning of the body. Eat fiber rich low carb foods like flax seeds, chia seeds, pistachios, cauliflower, strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, avocados and cucumbers among others to keep hunger at bay and aid digestion. Ensure that you involve in physical activities that burn calories. Walking for at least 30 minutes every day can go a long way.
Not Getting Enough Sleep
Sleep is a very important aspect of health. This is because your body works to support brain functions and your overall well being while you sleep. If you routinely do not get enough quality sleep, it can affect your health, cause weight gain or slow down weight loss process. Weighloss does not occur overnight. It has to do with series of activities that work closely for more efficiency. Just eating low carb meals without good sleep and physical activities to burn excess calories might jeopardize the success of your weight loss goals.
Lack of Exercise
Exercises are physical activities that burn energy units or calories. Exercise is a crucial aspect of a weight loss journey. It is not just important for weight loss but your overall health. It helps to keep the body physically and mentally fit! It is also good for the mind. If you are on a low carb diet and not engaging in any form of exercise routinely, it can slow down your weight loss goals because you won’t be expending the much energy you should, to complement your low carb or weight loss diet. Be sure to engage in exercises as just dieting is not enough to fight those pounds you need out of your body.
Metabolism is simply the rate at which your body burns calories. Some people have slow metabolism which implies that their bodies burn calories at a slow rate while some people are lucky to have fast metabolism which implies that their bodies burn calories at a fast rate. Which ever metabolism you have is not your own making. It can be determined by the genes you inherited. It also means that weight loss can take longer time for some people than some. In fact, people with fast metabolism do not quickly gain weight or keep weight on. So if you have a slow metabolism, do not expect speedy weight loss even on a low carb diet. Just stay on track with good sleep and exercises. Hopefully, you begin to see results in good time.
Some medications can cause weight gain or inhibit success on a weight loss journey. Very common examples are contraceptives. Most times women who no longer want to have more children choose a particular contraceptive to help achieve this. Most of the medications are hormonal. It could be drugs or injections. Many women have complained of gaining drastic weight shortly after they started taking some contraceptives. Some had to stop and choose some other forms due to the weight gain and difficulty in losing it. If you decide to take hormonal contraceptives and start gaining weight as a result, it is most likely that you won’t achieve effective weight loss even on a low carb diet.
These are just some reasons why you are not losing weight on a low carb diet. Just as we are different individuals, so are our bodies and systems. One size cannot fit all and what works for one person may not exactly work for another. Just try to know your body and what is best for you while staying fit and healthy!
