Wondering why we can’t stop talking about health? Well, it is because health is life and should be everyone’s priority. Ensure that whatever you consume has great nutritional benefits. Spices and herbs are great part of our nutrition because we add them to our foods for flavor and better taste. What kind of herbs or spices do you add to your meals? Are they healthy? Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the most powerful spices due to its amazing nutritional benefits. There is the fresh turmeric and the dry powdered form. It is yellow and has a subtle unique aroma. It has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years especially in India and also proven through numerous studies. Turmeric contains Curcumin which is a very strong antioxidant that also has anti-inflammatory effects.

Antioxidants are very important to the body because they help to fight and protect the body from free radicals. Another major benefit of curcumin contained in turmeric is that it helps to fight cancer by reducing the growth of cancerous cells. Studies also proves that this powerful compound can prevent certain cancers like colorectal cancer which is a cancer of the digestive system. It has also shown to prevent neurodegenarative disease like Alzheimer which is a major cause of dementia and also reliefs arthritis. It is important to note that to get substantial amount of curcumin, you have to take the supplements because the quantity in turmeric is not very high.

Turmeric can be added to soups or foods. It can also be taken directly in warm water or added to vegetable smoothies. Turmeric does not have a harsh taste and it blends easily in smoothies.

Thyme

This is one of my favorites. Thyme does not just add great flavor and nice aroma to your food. It is loaded with Vitamin C which strengthens the immune system and helps with cold. It also contains copper, fiber, Iron and manganese. Thyme is a great addition to several meals and cuisines around the world. From soups to chicken, meat, whole wheat macaroni or even rice meals. This flavorful leaves is one of the healthy spices and herbs that add taste and aroma to your food while also delivering great nutritional benefits to your body.

Oregano

This is one of the amazing healthy spices and herbs that has a strong but warm flavor that improves the taste of your food with its subtle sweetness. Oregano can be added to food fresh, dry or as oil. Although oregano originates from Greece, it commonly used in Italian cuisines and many meals around the world. Oregano is not just great topping for pizzas or addition to pasta, it can be added to stews, sauces, dressings, fish, meat or chicken soups.

This herb is also rich in antioxidants which may reduce inflammation and compounds that have antibacterial properties. If you don’t have fresh oregano around you, you can buy the dry one from grocery stores.

Garlic

Garlic is a plant in the onion family that is a great addition to your meals. It is also a powerful vegetable that is mostly used for health and medicinal purposes. Although garlic has a strong smell that discourages some people from eating much of it, it is incredible healthy! It has low calorie content and also contains vitamins and minerals. To reduce the smell of garlic in my food, I usually combine it with fresh ginger and blend smooth. It makes food taste delicious while offering great health benefits.

A major health benefit of garlic is that it contains active compounds that can reduce blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels and lowers the risk of heart diseases. Heart diseases are the major causes of death according to research, so it is very important to consume heart healthy foods!

Ginger

Ginger is actually a plant whose root is ginger. It is one of the healthiest and delicious spices on earth. Ginger is very common and grown in several parts of the world. It is added to a wide variety and foods and drinks due to its unique flavor and taste. I always have ginger and garlic paste in my fridge for cooking which I add a to almost every meal.

Ginger contains gingerol which is a powerful substance that is an antioxidant and also has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help prevent nausea and also rapidly lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels which are risk factors for heart diseases. It also helps with menstrual pain and has many other super benefits which are science based and outlined by healthline. You just can’t ignore this super food.

It is just a wonder root, delivering great flavor, taste and incredible health benefits. You can a make a super healthy anti-inflammatory vegetable smoothie with kale, baby spinach, ginger, a table spoon to turmeric powder, banana and berries. It is also a great addition to tea. Have you tried having green tea with mint, lemon and ginger? A powerful cup of nature’s goodness that is very hydrating and rich in antioxidants that will not just prevent and fight diseases, but also help to relieve your body of stress.

Black Pepper

Black pepper is also a very common spice that is used around the world. It is a plant that is grown for the peppercorn which is usually dried and used for spices and seasoning. This adds taste and flavor to food especially for people who love peppery foods or soups.

It is rich in antioxidants and also possess anti-inflammatory properties. Studies also show that black pepper may help to improve blood sugar level control and lower cholesterol. One thing I love about this spice is that it is very versatile and can be added to a wide variety of meals, dishes and cuisines. It can also be added directly to cooked food for more spice. It is commonly seen on restaurant tables and also in situations where you are cooking large portions of food for many people and do not want to make it spicy since some people do not eat spicy food.

However, be careful not to consume so much of it as it may lead to burning sensation in the throat or stomach.

Cumin

Cumin is also a very common nutty and warm spice that is super healthy. Cumin helps to improve the digestive system. It is also very rich in Iron, providing almost 20% of your daily Iron need in one teaspoon. Studies also show that cumin can help with weight or fat loss. This spice can be found in grocery stores in powdered form

All these show that food can actually be your medicine, naturally preventing and reducing the negative effect of diseases in your body. The herbs and spices you use mostly for taste and flavor can actually improve the quality of your life.
