Benefits of Raw Spinach

If you haven’t been eating spinach, there are great reasons why you should! Spinach is one of the healthiest foods on earth. This is because they are loaded with fiber, minerals, vitamins and antioxidants which have great health benefits. Spinach is in the class of leafy green vegetables. It is low in carbs and rich in body nutrients. There is baby spinach which is tender and can be eaten raw or the mature spinach which is mostly cooked. Baby spinach tastes great when garnished with a low carb cream and protein or any healthy food. Below are some benefits of eating raw spinach.

Rich In Iron

Spinach is rich in Iron. Iron is an important substance that aids the functioning of the haemoglobin which is a protein found in the red blood cells. Iron helps haemoglobin to transport oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. Deficiency of Iron implies that your body will not have enough oxygen carrying red blood cells and this can lead to various health issues like fatigue, breathlessness, heart palpitations and pale skin.

Iron is very crucial for the survival of every human being especially pregnant women who require more iron intake as the body needs to send oxygen to the fetus as well. That is the reason why pregnant women are given iron supplements to make up for any deficiency that might result from its shortage through food intake. They are also advised to consume foods rich in iron to have enough oxygen carrying red blood cells. Raw spinach contains a 15% or Iron per 100g.

Promotes Good Eyesight

Raw spinach also contains a great amount of vitamin A which is very important for the eyes. Retinal is an active form of vitamin A which combine with a protein called opsin to promote strong color and low light vision. It also helps to protect and maintain the cornea which is the transparent part of the eye that covers the iris pupil and anterior chamber. A cup of raw spinach which is about 30g contains 56% (2813 IU) of vitamin A while 100g contains 188%. Quite a great amount and more reason why you should consume spinach.

Aids Digestion

Raw spinach contains fiber which supports the digestive system by keeping the digestive track flowing and aiding regular and soft bowel movements. Fiber is highly essential for the digestive system to run smoothly. This is the reason why it is required daily by the body and foods rich in fiber can make this supply for the body. It can also help to prevent constipation since food will be properly digested and ensures that the excess that is not needed by the body is not retained but passed out efficiently. 100g of raw spinach contains 8% of fiber.

Great For Skin

Spinach contains a good amount of vitamin C which is great for the skin. Vitamin C contains an antioxidant called ascorbic acid which facilitates the production of collagen that strengthens the skin and fights against wrinkles and fine lines and diminishes signs of aging. Vitamin C also protects the skin cells from damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) rays exposure which can burn the skin and even cause skin cancer. 100g of spinach contains 31% if vitamin C.

Vitamin C is also important to the functioning of the immune system as it helps to strengthen it. The immune system works to defend the body against infections.

It is important to know that raw spinach contains calcium. However, it also contains oxalic acid which interferes with the absorption of its calcium content by the body. Oxalic acid is broken down in vegetables during cooking. So you can choose to cook your spinach or consume raw and get your daily supply of calcium from other foods like sesame, chia seeds, yogurt, celery, almonds, whey protein, beans and lentils and other calcium fortified foods.
